 SOKOLA BAGI ANAK RIMBA
Keynote talk by Butet Manurung
Co-founder of SOKOLA, Ashoka Fellow

Friday, 29 June from 6.00pm – 8.00pm (refreshments provided)

Venue: Executive Media Theatre, Level 5, Administration Building, 81 Victoria Street,
Singapore Management University, Singapore 188065

“Orang Rimba” literally means ‘forest people’ – they number in the hundreds, live in thatched huts, wear loin cloths, hunt for deer, snakes, and wild boars.

The outside world has, unfortunately, arrived uninvited at their doorstep, and given the rate at which their habitat is being destroyed …

[without literacy and education] these people will become beggars, coolies, and threatened to be evicted from their own forests and land …”

 – excerpt from an interview with Butet Manurung, Indonesian Eco Heroes, 2010.

For her work to bring literacy and education to Orang Rimba and other remote communities, Butet Manurung was awarded "Man and Biosphere Award" by UNESCO in 2001, "Hero of Asia" by TIME Magazine in 2004, "Asia Young Leader" in 2007, "Ashoka Fellow" in 2006, and "Young Global Leader" in 2009.

Butet's first book, The Jungle School, originally published in Indonesian language as Sokola Rimba will be on sale after the presentation.

All proceeds from the book sales will fund SOKOLA's educational activities.

“Hutan Tayawi masih menyisakan embun pekat pagi itu … Anak-anak di komunitas Tayawi membangunkan kami dengan teriakan lantang,"Bapak guru bangun! Bapak guru bangun, mari kita sekolah!"

Kami pun terbangun oleh suara murid-murid .. .. yang membangunkan kami sambil membawa kayu bakar dan air untuk kami bermasak, kami pun bergegas menyiapkan sarapan dibantu mereka, lalu kami pun melanjutkan proses sekolah setelah usai sarapan ...”

(Catatan Harian Sokola Tayawi, Halmahera, Maluku Utara)

Atas karyanya melalui SOKOLA, Butet Manurung bersama team telah mendapat berbagai penghargaan, di antaranya “Man and Biosphere Award” oleh UNESCO tahun 2001, TIME Magazine's “Hero of Asia” tahun 2004, Asia Society's “Asia Young Leader” tahun 2007, World Economic Forum's “Young Global Leader” tahun 2009, dan Ashoka Fellow tahun 2006.

Acara ini terselenggara atas kerjasama Indonesian Professionals’ Association (IPA) dan Lien Centre for Social Innovation.
